Atlantic Highlands (AH) is a lovely place to spend the day doing all the things you want to on your beach vacation. Here's an easy way to spend the day without having to make reservations or plan far ahead. And it works rain or shine!
If you BIKE: go via the Henry Hudson Trail which starts at the end of our road and trails along the Shrewsbury River. Stop for incredible pictures before you end up at the Atlantic Highlands Marina. Eat a hearty meal at Sissy's on the Harbor (bring cash!).
If you DRIVE: Atlantic Highlands downtown is less than 10min drive. Head straight to Zoe Emilios Cafe for one of the best authentic Mexican meals you'll ever have. This cheerful and charming cafe is tucked away in a neighborhood just a few blocks away from First Avenue (AH's 'Main Street').
Whether you bike or drive, make sure to spend a little time at the Marina watching boats sail by, enjoying spectacular views of the Bay and NYC and of course, taking great pictures!
Spend the afternoon walking off your delcious meal strolling along the shops on First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands' 'Main Street'. You can get some bike gear and local swag at Highlander Bicycle Company There's a couple vintage-y trinket shops to poke around. And if I need something,
I know I will find it at Oyster General whether I need a sparkly vintage top, a great bag, or a hostess gift that feels super luxurious without being overpriced. Across the street, there's Bungalow Road another shop where I'm guaranteed to find something cute for a night out or a pair of dreamy pjs for my vacation week.
If it's raining, plan on catching a movie at SmodCastle Cinemas or see what's happening at the First Avenue Playhouse. Post popcorning, plan on a refreshing pick-me-up at Jus Organic or hit up Nicholas Creamery for a peanutbutterpalooza or more of a classic cone - everyone screams for ice cream when they're at the Jersey Shore!
For dinner we like the food and vibes at the Atlantic House - there's good people watching whether you are on the open roof deck, or inside checking out the lively bar scene. There's usually live music too. If you want something even sexier, try Strada Pizza Bar for dinner. It's Italian, delicious and a hint pricey but worth it.
Pro Tips:
AH is pretty dog friendly, there's seating outside everywhere, check webites before you go.
Pick up spirits for the rest of the trip at Royal Atlantic Wines or at Saltwater Liquors across the highway.
Atlantic Highlands also has a Seastreak Ferry stop with a free bus between the AH and the Highlands stop, which is right down the street.
