Highlands is the highest point on the US Eastern Seaboard and just 27 miles from NYC so it has always played in an important role in protecting the coast and city. If you are a history buff, have a rainy day, or just want something different to do while on your beach vacation, these are a few things worth exploring for a hint of history. Everywhere listed is just a short bike or car ride, and even walkable from the Beach Lodge.
-Sandy Hook Gateway National Park - Today this 7 mile stretch of land that protects Highlands from the ocean is known for its breathtaking beaches & bike trails but it used to play a crucial role in defending NYC. From the Sandy Hook Lighthouse which is the oldest working lighthouse in the US to the Captains Quarters you can spend days exploring here any time of year. When you're done exploring, head to the gorgeous MULE BAR Tavern at the end of the hook for an excellent meal, live music and more beautiful views.
The beautiful Twin Lights Lighthouse first built in 1749 to warn NYC of approaching French Warships. Today you can visit the museum and walk up the towers for spectacular views of NYC. Stay for a picnic in warm weather.
Post picnic, head down the hill to Off the Hook for a game of cornhole, live music and their off the hook monthly beer features.
Hartshorne Woods - The Army set up here to defend the New York Harbor, then after the Cold War it was used as a commander center for missle defense & radar monitoring. Today you can tour the old Army barricks and enjoy its 14 miles of biking & hiking trails and the beautiful fishing pier. Head out on the Sea Bright side and go to Barnacle Bill's in Rumson, FAMOUS for its burgers and long waits. We love getting a pre dinner drink and hanging outside to enjoy sunset views of the Navesink.
Gertrude Ederle Park- 'Trudy' was an Olympic Champion and the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926. This serene little park stands on top of a hill overlooking Sandy Hook Bay, the ocean and NYC and is the perfect destination for a walk with your pup and pictures of the gorgeous bright red BAHRS side.
Head to Bahr's Landing afterwards for delicious clam chowder and more of the same great views. Bahr's is a Highlands institution with its own history of stories to tell. Pups allowed outside!!
